Jessie was a deaf XL Bully pup that came to the Northumberland Dog Rescue centre just outside Alnwick at the end of April, aged just 12 weeks old. She was a typical playful puppy, that loved to get into mischief and have fun with her 2 legged and 4 legged friends, and of course, as with all puppies, there was no sign of viciousness, no matter what the breed of dog.

When on 31 October 2023 the government announced the XL Bully breed ban, we immediately knew she wouldn't be ready for adoption by 31 December 2023, the timescale was just too short, this then left us with 2 possible options.

The 1st option, was to have a perfectly healthy happy young dog put to sleep (killed), and claim the £100 compensation the government were offering rescue centres. This option wasn't even considered!

The 2nd option was to find a way that we could look after Jessie as a permanent rescue at our centre, this would tie up a valuable rescue kennel space for possibly 10-15 years, but was infinitely preferable to having her put to sleep.

Finally on 19 December 2023 the government announced an exemption scheme for rehoming centres, this allowed rescue centres to apply for an exemption for any XL Bully they took into their care prior to 31 October 2023.

This meant that we could continue to care for, and look after Jessie for the rest of her natural life. It does mean that she will be kept in a secure kennel between play and exercise times, but this is something she's been used to virtually all of her life and she'll still be able to interact with her 4 and 2 legged friends and companions from within her own kennel.

Jessie is now officially confirmed as a permanent member of the #NDRFamily after we received her exemption papers from DEFRA.

This means that, although not ideal, Jessie will NOT be put to sleep because of the XL Bully Ban, but will live out her days with us as our #NDRPet4Life with her 2 and 4 legged friends at the Northumberland Dog Rescue. It also means that yes, we will incur extra costs involved with her heating, food, and vets bills, and it will mean we have 1 less kennel space for a rescue dog, but we KNOW that she's worth it, and we're reminded of that every time we see her happy smiling face when she sees and greets us.
